Program Notes:
 
My initial appreciation for Marianne Moore’s poem, “Roses Only,” was fixed on the line, “your thorns are the best part of you.” However, as I digested the text over time, I came to recognize a parallel between her words and my experience of writing a piece that can be performed both virtually and in-person. Roses are always recognized for the obvious visual beauty of their petals, but the thorns offer so much value and beauty in their own right. In working with C4: the Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, I have benefitted from a similar, elevated appreciation for the alternate approaches to creating music for virtual mediums that I wouldn’t have necessarily had before.
